Welcome aboard! This forum is the place to talk sailboats: buying and selling, maintenance and repair, cruising, gear, and learning to sail.

A few ground rules to keep it useful for everyone:

  • Be respectful and courteous to other members
  • Use descriptive titles that clearly explain your topic
  • Search before posting — your question may already have an answer
  • Stay on topic and keep discussions relevant to sailing
  • No spam or advertising

Not sure where to start? Introduce yourself below — what do you sail, and where?

Paul Trammell here. I sail a Cartwright 40. It's a heavy full-keel cutter built in 1972. I've sailed her all over between Newfoundland and Panama, with a few seasons in The Bahamas. Currently, I am in Bocas del Toro, Panama. My next maintenance project is prepping and painting the steel mast step, which sits at a low point in the bilge, which is a problem because it is always wet. I plan to chip away and sand away the rust, then prime and paint with something serious and appropriate. Any suggestions?
