Beginner question. Bought a new sailboat- when you buy new jib sheets, do I have to do the end wrapping or is this something that can be done at a commercial store like West Marine?

I wouldn’t mind learning how to “wrap” lines as I’ve seen, but not a lot of issues on new boat, but one that needs attention is the jib sheets. Long story…..

Hey brock, maybe I can help, "whipping" lines is super easy, there's tons of videos of different techniques. You can also tape the end cut, pull a little bit of the core out, and then melt the ends together with a flame and squish with fingers:)

Thanks. Used to do the melting w 550 cord and other rope. Thought that was frowned on.

Tape, burn, then whip over the tape when you have time.

I was taught to double whip. (I don't always do it) The idea of double whipping is the first whipping, as you would expect, goes about one line diameter from the end and another about 1 or 2 inches above that. The reasoning is the first one is going to fall out and the second one saves the line suddenly unraveling without warning. This is much more of a problem on three stand or plaited line than on double braid. Whipping is easy. When buy new lines cut them with a hot knife or wrap with tape and cut through the tape. Then go sailing. Later when you are swinging at anchor some where calm and you are a little board because every body is taking a nap, get you rneedle and twine and whip a line. On most boats Working like this you will have all the lines whipped by the end of the season.
